Click here for game schedule for the First Annual Bob Chase Frostbite Sled Hockey Championship. Fort Wayne is the first city in Indiana to have a recognized sled hockey program, but it is also the first in the State to host a sled hockey tournament.  In order to make this a success, we will need many volunteers for the games.  Below are the descriptions of the various positions needed for each game.  Some require specific skills, and others are more general in nature. nina-brenden

If you do not have the availability to volunteer during this weekend, but would still like to help, we are also asking for donations of food for the hospitality room.  Soda, chips, bottled water, snack food, etc. would help us provide a place for teams, to gather and get to know each other better.

  • Timekeeper:
    • They will run the score clock, and should have prior experience
  • Scorekeeper:
    • They will fill out the score sheet, and should have prior experience
  • On-Ice Assistant:
    • For the youth games, this individual will be on the ice and assist any struggling players as needed
  • Hospitality Room:
    • Will keep the room neat, and organize food as required
  • Check in Table:
    • Check in teams for the first time, direct them where to go in the rink, provide directions to out of town teams.
  • Team Liaison-Home:
    • They will assist teams as needed.  This may involve moving equipment to storage areas
  • Team Liaison-Visitor:
    • They will assist teams as needed.  This may involve moving equipment to storage areas

Please contact Chuck for more information or to sign up for any of the positions during the weekend.  With your help, we will be able to make this tournament a great success.

Filed under: Prep Flyers,Turnstone,Varsity,Varsity Flyers,wheelchair basketball — activeadaptive @ 6:44 am

The 2009 Claddaugh South Side Classic hosted by GLASA at Saint Xavier University Shannon Center (Saturday, January 24) both the Turnstone Prep and Varsity Flyers wheelchair basketball teams went undefeated as they cruise a combined 6-0.

The Prep Flyers were clicking on all cylinders as they defeated the Milwaukee Heat 19-2, GLASA Wave 20-7 and Windy City Warriors 30-2. All three opposing teams have great potential as their kids played extremely hard and gave 100% effort all the way through the final seconds. It’ll be exciting to watch these opposing teams improve as they play in more tournaments.

The Varsity Flyers battled through all their wins over Windy City Warriors 32-17, St. Louis Jr. Rolling Rams 41-28 & Milwaukee Heat 40-35 as all the teams never let up and made the Flyers earned each win.

Prep Flyers Current Record: 9-4

Also, just in-case you haven’t already heard… the Fort Wayne Fire Department and FW Police Department hockey teams will be playing in a charity game (in sleds) during the ‘Bob Chase Frostbite Sled Hockey Championship’. Prep Flyers Defeat Top Ranked Sterling Heights Challengers

The Prep Turnstone Flyers (6-4) wheelchair basketball team found a way to defeat the previous undefeated #2 Prep Sterling Heights Challengers (11-2) two times yesterday (Saturday, January 17, 2009) at Turnstone Center. In the 100_0835first game the Prep Flyers broke out to an early 17-5 lead at halftime as they cruised along to win 27-15. In the second game the Challengers came out with vengeance as they led 10-6 at halftime and looked good going into the 4th quarter with a 14-12 lead; however, the Prep Flyers came alive and went on a 12-0 run to win 24-14. *The Challengers were a little shorthanded this weekend as only 5 players of the 13 member team made the trip.

The Varsity teams from both the Flyers & Challengers played two games yesterday as the Challengers were victorious in both 40-10 and 52-19. The Flyers battle throughout (especially in the 2nd game); however, the Flyers chemistry was a little different without one of their starters who wasn’t able to make the trip

They have a well done 30 min Documentary on the story of the men on Canada’s National Sledge hockey team and their quest to be the dominant force in this fast-paced game begins long before Selection Camp takes place in a bedroom community of Ottawa. It begins, for some, at birth – for others just nine years ago.

Synopsis: It is the story of a remarkable team and even more remarkable men! They are as different as the disabilities that brought them together as a team. Each man, whether born with a disability, or come to it by accident, has learned to live through adversity. They joke amongst themselves about separating the “amps” and the “wheelies” into separate dressing rooms. But one thing is certain; they have bonded together into a unique and sometimes dysfunctional family with a single purpose – to be World Champions in their chosen sport of Ice Sledge Hockey.

Paralympian April Holmes Helps Launch the Air Jordan 2009

Paralympic gold medalist April Holmes, a Team Jordan track & field athlete, helped Michael Jordan launch the Air Jordan 2009 in New York City this month. The design of the shoe is inspired by the carbon fiber prosthetic running technology used by Holmes and other Paralympic athletes.

A press release about the shoe stated, “The AIR JORDAN 2009 incorporates a new, innovative technology in basketball footwear called Articulated Propulsion Technology, or APT…Following the same basic form as the prosthesis Holmes wore during her gold medal 100-meter race for the 2008 Paralympic Games, the AIR JORDAN 2009′s APT allows the athlete to explosively and quickly propel forward on the court.”

An exclusive limited release AIR JORDAN 2009 launches on Saturday, January 31, 2009 with a suggested retail price of $230. The first nationwide launch coincides with All-Star Weekend, releasing on Saturday, February 14, 2009 with a suggested retail price of $190.

Chicago Paralympic Development Program Launched

Chicago 2016, World Sport Chicago (WSC), U.S. Paralympics and ten partner agencies have announced the launch of the Chicago Paralympic Development Program. The program is the first of its kind in the country, and it aims to provide the visually and physically impaired with the expertise and resources needed to get involved in Paralympic sports. It will officially begin operation in February 2009.

At first, there will be an emphasis on cycling, judo and boccia. The three sports allow individuals with visual impairments as well as physical disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy to participate.

The agencies partnering with Chicago 2016, WSC and U.S. Paralympics include the Chicago Park District, Blaze Sports of America, the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, Maine-Niles Special Recreation, Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association, Rockford Park District, Northeast DuPage Special Recreation, Western DuPage Special Recreation and Northwest DuPage Special Recreation.

USOC Family Loses Two Champions

On January 2, the USOC family lost two members of the 2008 U.S. Paralympic Team. Sailing athlete Nick Scandone (Fountain Valley, Calif.), 42, and swimmer Marin Morrison (Sammamish, Wash.), 18, each passed away after battling long illnesses.

“Nick and Marin both pursued excellence on the field of play. More importantly, they and their families pursued excellence in life and were outstanding role models for Olympians, Paralympians and all Americans,” said Charlie Huebner, USOC Chief of Paralympics. “The U.S. Olympic Committee and all Olympians and Paralympians extend our deepest condolences to their families, and pledge to continue to carry their spirit forward to touch the lives of others, as they have so significantly touched ours.”

Scandone and partner Maureen McKinnon-Tucker claimed a gold medal in the SKUD-18 class at the Games last summer and Morrison competed in the 50-meter freestyle, 100-m freestyle and 50-meter backstroke events in Beijing.
