During the middle of the tournament the games were paused to honor Laurie Williams who passed away July 9, 2007. A framed jersey In Memory of Laurie will be displayed at Turnstone with the following words:

Laurie was a valued member of the inaugural Flyers Power Soccer team. Through her determination and competitive spirit she inspired us all to reach higher. Never one to sit on the sidelines in life or in her new found sport; she always displayed a positive and supportive attitude to her teammates and everyone she met. She exemplified toughness by playing through a major tournament after suffering an injury, which she would not discuss for fear it would keep her sidelined. A True Champion, she is loved, missed and most of all… will always be remembered.

Former Varsity Turnstone Flyers Zack Sikora earned the Sportmanship award as member of the Ohio Rolling Hoopstars at the Midwest Regional. Last season Zack was the leading scorer on the D3 Moraine Minutemen where they finished 6th. Kudos to Zack for challenging himself in the much tougher Championship Division. I’m sure with a full summer of preparation the Hoopstars will be even more prepared as they compete with the top mens teams in the nation.

Prep & Varsity Flyers Unstoppable at Chicago Wheelchair Basketball Tourney

Filed under: Prep Flyers, Turnstone, Varsity, Varsity Flyers, wheelchair basketball — activeadaptive @ 6:44 am

The 2009 Claddaugh South Side Classic hosted by GLASA at Saint Xavier University Shannon Center (Saturday, January 24) both the Turnstone Prep and Varsity Flyers wheelchair basketball teams went undefeated as they cruise a combined 6-0.

The Prep Flyers were clicking on all cylinders as they defeated the Milwaukee Heat 19-2, GLASA Wave 20-7 and Windy City Warriors 30-2. All three opposing teams have great potential as their kids played extremely hard and gave 100% effort all the way through the final seconds. It’ll be exciting to watch these opposing teams improve as they play in more tournaments.

The Varsity Flyers battled through all their wins over Windy City Warriors 32-17, St. Louis Jr. Rolling Rams 41-28 & Milwaukee Heat 40-35 as all the teams never let up and made the Flyers earned each win.

    Prep Flyers Current Record: 9-4

    Varsity Flyers Current Record: 13-4

My last email about this is posted at the following link… http://activeadaptive.wordpress.com/2009/01/07/komet-raffle-sled-hockey/ here you will learn more on how you can get help make this a true success.
    • Please continue to email me the total # of FREE tickets your family is requesting for the Feb. 13 hockey game. Along with the Komet Raffle, the sled hockey team will be playing during the 2nd intermission. This is a great opportunity to showcase our sport to 7,000 plus people. If you’re planning on being a part of this please email me by Feb. 3rd. *This is the same date I need to know what raffle item(s) you’re contributing.

    ——————————–

Also, just in-case you haven’t already heard… the Fort Wayne Fire Department and FW Police Department hockey teams will be playing in a charity game (in sleds) during the ‘Bob Chase Frostbite Sled Hockey Championship’. It’s been fun to watch the friendly competitiveness of both teams as they’ve been practicing with the Turnstone Flyers sled hockey team.
    • If you haven’t already done so, every sled hockey player (ABs and Disabled) needs to fill out US Hockey registration form. These forms can be found at the front desk (same place you sign in before each practice).

They have a well done 30 min Documentary on the story of the men on Canada’s National Sledge hockey team and their quest to be the dominant force in this fast-paced game begins long before Selection Camp takes place in a bedroom community of Ottawa. It begins, for some, at birth – for others just nine years ago.

Synopsis: It is the story of a remarkable team and even more remarkable men! They are as different as the disabilities that brought them together as a team. Each man, whether born with a disability, or come to it by accident, has learned to live through adversity. They joke amongst themselves about separating the “amps” and the “wheelies” into separate dressing rooms. But one thing is certain; they have bonded together into a unique and sometimes dysfunctional family with a single purpose – to be World Champions in their chosen sport of Ice Sledge Hockey.

For those who have read my blog postings at either Turnstone’s Discussion Board or http://www.myspace.com/adaptive_sports Thanks. I appreciate all the support and I hope you continue to spread the good word and enjoy future postings.

I started to email adaptive sports updates back during the inaugural 03-04 season of the Prep Turnstone Flyers wheelchair basketball team. The main audience at that time was personal contacts and team members. Then when Turnstone started it’s on-line Discussion Board I began to add the email updates to the forum where other’s who log-in to this community networking could follow what was going on in the adaptive sports community. From October – July 2008 I had a lot of fun with the 28 postings. The site was great with publishing PDF and Word documents along with posting pictures and videos with ease. It was trully a great community networking group similar to RHI support forum; however, I wanted to broaden the audience. So, with help from a good friend, Kevin Showalter, the MySpace page was created back in early July 2008 where I had a good run with just over 40 post (many of them also added to PeopleOnWheels.org) but recently became frustrated with individuals not able to click on links without going through multiple steps and the numerous formating issues.

So, here I am trying something new again. Welcome to my new home. Hope you enjoy and will come back frequently!
