The Turnstone Flyers are divided into two teams: Prep and Varsity. Prep Flyers ages 8-12. Varsity Flyers ages 13- graduation of high school.
Each team consists of players (male and female) with a variety of physical disabilities including spinal cord injury, Spina Bifida, Perthes Disease, Cerebral Palsy, an amputation, a significant orthopedic problem, or some other type of disability that limits their ability to compete at a competitive level against their able-body peers. The Turnstone Flyers play competitive games against other teams in the Midwest region, including Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, and Wisconsin. The season runs from October through March with games and/or tournaments scheduled at least once a month. In the past, both teams have qualified and competed at the national tournaments held in Birmingham, AL; San Jose, CA; Houston,TX; Stillwater, OK; Philadelphia, PA; Denver, CO and Seattle, WA.
The Turnstone Flyers Wheelchair Basketball program (originally Turnstone Fury) started with only three kids back in the fall of 1994. After numerious practices an
d added players the group competed in their first tournament January of 1998 down at Southern Illinois University. Success didn’t come early but after countless hours in the gym and getting beat by older, stronger, and more experience teams the 2001-2002 Turnstone Flyers made history by qualify for Varsity Nationals for the first time. From that date the Flyers haven’t looked back and have qualified for Varsity Nationals the past 8 seasons. With the growing popularity of wheelchair basketball in Fort Wayne the Turnstone Flyers added a Prep team for the 2003-2004 season. The prep team has been just as successful by qualify for Prep Nationals the past 6 seasons.
