A person can participate in adaptive sports as long as they have a permanent physical disability that limits their participation in able-bodied sports. They may have an amputation, spinal cord injury, Spina Bifida, Perthes Disease, Cerebral Palsy, a significant orthopedic problem, or some other type of disability that restricts their movement. An individual doesn’t have to be wheelchair bound. Many athletes in adaptive sports can walk however are limited when competing against able-body athletes. On the other side, in most cases, no disability is too severe to participate or be involved in some way. Adaptive Sports can be fast paced, challenging, and competitive. It provides an opportunity to exercise, make new friends, develop social and teamwork skills, increase confidence, and have fun!
