Varsity Turnstone Flyers Battle With The Best in The Midwest – Wheelchair Basketball –

In the last tournament before the Midwest Conference Championship, the Varsity Turnstone Flyers wheelchair basketball team hosted games yesterday (2/6/2010) versus two of the top 5 teams in the nation: #4 Sterling Heights Challengers and #5 Windy City Warriors along with #17 Milwaukee Wheelin’ Wizards who will likely finish in the top 5 by the end of the season.

In the first round the Flyers didn’t have enough fire power against the under rated Wizards who defeated the Flyers 60-31.

The next match was versus the Warriors from Chicago. The Flyers had a tough time capitalizing on their opportunities as they lose 40-21 .

In the final game the Flyers faced the Challengers from Detroit. The Flyers came out strong as they lead 28-18 in the first half; however, the Challengers stormed back and edged the Flyers by 3  points – 48-45

Varsity Flyers Current Record: 8-13

Prep Flyers Continue to Improve

Over in Chicago, IL the Prep Turnstone Flyers win three straight games to face-off vs conference rivals Grand Rapids Jr. Pacers for the GLASA – Claddagh Invitational Championship. In a classic battle between the top two Prep teams in the Midwest Conference, the Pacers defeated the Flyers for the 4th time this season.

Quick game recaps:

Flyers 28 Milwaukee Heat 10
The Heat have improved since last time we played but the Flyer full team effort with all but two baskets made off of direct passes couldn’t be stopped.

Flyers 18 GLASA Wave 8
The Flyers struggled early with only two points in the first half. Good news is shots started to fall and the defense tighten up to hold the Wave scoreless in the 2nd half to win by 10

Flyers 24 Michigan Pistons 6
The young Pistons battled but their shots just didn’t fall.

Flyers 14 Grand Rapids Jr. Pacers 19
In the 4th quarter the Flyers had seven scoring chances but couldn’t capitalize on any of them as the Pacers secure the win with two late baskets. These two teams will likely meet again at the “Keep Up The Pace” Midwest Conference Championships Feb. 20-21 and the Flyers home “Prep for the Future” tourney on March 6 before Nationals in Denver, CO April 10-11, 2010.

Wheelchair Basketball: Prep finishes 2nd … Varsity secures 4th at the Rockford, IL Tourney

Filed under: Prep Flyers,RHI,Turnstone,Varsity Flyers,wheelchair basketball — activeadaptive @ 10:33 pm

At the 10th Annual Jr. Wheelchair Basketball Holiday Tournament in Rockford, IL (December 12-13, 2009) the Prep Turnstone Flyers battled all the way to the Championship Game while the Varsity Flyers manage  a 4th place finish. The Varsity team played with the fab 5 as a few team members couldn’t make the trip.

Prep Flyers Results

Game 1 — Flyers 17   LWSRA Falcons 12 —- This win didn’t come easy. Flyers started off flat and were down 10-8 to start the 4th quarter. Shots started to fall and Flyers went on a 9-2 run to close out the game. Lazero Rodriguez scored his first free throw.

Game 2 — Flyers 16   Milwaukee Heat 6 — In the second pool play game the Flyers held conference foe scoreless in the 1st half.

Game 3 — Flyers 24   GLASA Wave 20 — Both teams were on their A game in this Semifinal game. End of 1st Quarter Flyers were up 10-6. Teams traded baskets throughout. GLASA would close to gap to 4 points a few times but Randall basket down the middle late in the 4th quarter secured the victory. ** Team played strong for the final 3 minutes without Alex Leckron as he received medical attention with his bloody nose.

Game 4 — Flyers 8   Courage Center Rowdies 14 — The Rowdies executed their game plan more effectively then the Flyers as they held the Flyers to mainly low percentage outside shots to win the Championship. ***The Rowdies and Flyers are very familiar with the big stage. At last year nationals the Flyers defeated the Rowdies in pool play but later lost to them in the semifinals. Courage went on to win a National Championship, while the Flyers finished 3rd last season. These two tames will not see each other again until maybe a repeat match up at Nationals again.

Prep Flyers Stats:

Randall Kongar – 6 steals, 12 rebounds, 3 assist, 2 points

Alex Leckron – 4 steals 19 rebounds, 2 assists, 12 points, 1 block

Turnstone Flyers Sled Hockey Team Showcase Skills in South Bend, Indiana

Group picture of Turnstone Flyers & Grand Rapids Sled Wings

The Turnstone Flyers Adult Sled Hockey played in South Bend, IN this past Sunday, November 22, 2009 where they played vs the undefeated St. Joseph’s High School AB hockey team and the Grand Rapids, MI sled hockey team. Both games were friendly scrimmages to honor Adam Milani, a 1984 St. Joe graduate who was paralyzed during a hockey game. Milani graduated from University of Notre Dame in 1988 and from Duke University Law School in 1991. He went on to become a renowned scholar on disability law, writing four books and numerous articles on the law of disability discrimination. Milani passed away in 2005, at the age of 39.

The St. Joseph’s hockey coach, Chris Kleva, spearheaded the event that raised enough funds to support both Grand Rapids and Turnstone sled hockey teams a new sled and a little extra for team expenses.

The Flyers along with a few Grand Rapids players defeated the St. Joe team 6-0. Grand Rapids then defeated Turnstone 2-0.

South Bend’s NBC affiliate (WNDU-TV 16) had local coverage on these games. Two video’s are posted on their site. I suggest watching the “Sled hockey game at St. Joe high school raises money for disabled players” piece: Check it out at  http://www.wndu.com/localnews/headlines/71096182.html
