Turnstone Flyers Sled Hockey Team Showcase Skills in South Bend, Indiana

Group picture of Turnstone Flyers & Grand Rapids Sled Wings

The Turnstone Flyers Adult Sled Hockey played in South Bend, IN this past Sunday, November 22, 2009 where they played vs the undefeated St. Joseph’s High School AB hockey team and the Grand Rapids, MI sled hockey team. Both games were friendly scrimmages to honor Adam Milani, a 1984 St. Joe graduate who was paralyzed during a hockey game. Milani graduated from University of Notre Dame in 1988 and from Duke University Law School in 1991. He went on to become a renowned scholar on disability law, writing four books and numerous articles on the law of disability discrimination. Milani passed away in 2005, at the age of 39.

The St. Joseph’s hockey coach, Chris Kleva, spearheaded the event that raised enough funds to support both Grand Rapids and Turnstone sled hockey teams a new sled and a little extra for team expenses.

The Flyers along with a few Grand Rapids players defeated the St. Joe team 6-0. Grand Rapids then defeated Turnstone 2-0.

South Bend’s NBC affiliate (WNDU-TV 16) had local coverage on these games. Two video’s are posted on their site. I suggest watching the “Sled hockey game at St. Joe high school raises money for disabled players” piece: Check it out at  http://www.wndu.com/localnews/headlines/71096182.html

America’s Cup Update: USA Men’s Wheelchair Basketball team Undefeated after 3 – Advance to Quarterfinal

Filed under: Paralympic, wheelchair basketball — activeadaptive @ 6:17 pm

USA Men’s wheelchair basketball team continues to dominate international competition as they win 3 straight and will face Colombia in the Quarterfinals today (8/27/09) at 10:00pm (EDT) in Richmond, BC (Western Canada) at the 09′ Americas Cup.

USA vs Colombia Quarterfinal Prediction: In the three wins team USA has outscored their competition 272 – 110. Their next opponent on the other hand has been outscored 208-160. With all that said, Colombia has the height and talent — WILMAN RIOS, NELSON LONDONO, and RODNEY HAWKINS — to challenge the American’s. Expect the game to be close early with Londono and Hawkins being effective in the paint but team USA depth should be more then enough to keep things rolling and move on to the semifinals.

Also check out: Team Canada is also cruising along in pool play as they stay undefeated going into their quarterfinal match vs Jamaica today at 8:00pm (EDT). With both Canada and USA being the top seed on opposite pools, they’re lined up to face each other in the Championship game if both teams win their next two games.

Interesting Nugget: Canada’s elite athlete Patrick Anderson played in his last game yesterday. Learn why at his blog http://patrickanderson.ca/

All games are broadcast LIVE on http://www.sportscanada.tv/ or watch archived games at wheelchairbasketball.ca.
